The restoration and retrieval of the Caucasian Tsabla breed begins

Within the framework of the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) project ,, Conservation and development of dual-purpose cattle breeds in Eastern Europe’’, the training was organized for the staff of the department of Livestock Breeding, Veterinary and Forage Production of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture. FAO's European trainers shared the theoretical and practical knowledge in the direction of determining the breeds of cattle. The aim of the project is to search the Caucasian Tsabla breed, which implies to take the samples and study the breed.

At the first stage of the project, specialists of Livestock Breeding will visit the Ninotsminda, Akhalkalaki, Akhaltsikhe, Dmanisi, Tsalka and Dedoplistskaro farms, where Caucasian Tsabla breed cattle were traditionally widespread. With the purpose of determining the breed of cattle, genetic samples and measurements will be taken and the questionnaires will be filled up with farmers. The aim of the project is to restore the aboriginal breeds and produce high-quality livestock.

The genetic samples taken in Georgia will be sent to the laboratory of Austria and there will be determined whether the breeding relationships exist between the Georgian, Armenian and Ukrainian breeds and it will be possible to find out whether it is possible to make their cross-breeding with the purpose of the breed improvement or not.

As a result of analyzes, a catalog will be created on the data of the cattle, where complete information on its productivity and characteristics of the breed will be placed.

The project ,,Conservation and development of dual-purpose cattle breeds in Eastern Europe’’ is underway jointly in Georgia, in Ukraine and in Azerbaijan.
