Five Georgian varieties of mulberry silkworm were transferred to Georgia, which were kept in Uzbekistan from the 70s-80s of the last century

Levan Ujmajuridze, Director of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture, hosted Shukhrat Abdulazizov, Director of the Uzbek Sericulture Research Institute and members of the Uzbek delegation at the Silk Laboratory of Tsilkani. Levan Ujmajuridze informed the guests about the implemented and ongoing works and existing projects in the field of silkworm breeding. The Uzbek side handed over five Georgian mulberry silkworm varieties to Georgia that were kept in the world collection of mulberry silkworm varieties in Uzbekistan from the 70s and 80s of the last century. For the purpose of conducting joint scientific research, the Georgian side was additionally awarded four collectible and four Uzbek varieties of mulberry silkworm.

"Preservation of the mulberry silk gene pool is one of the preconditions for the revival of Georgian silk industry. The Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture is actively working to find and protect the mulberry silk gene pool. It is important to note that Georgian-Uzbek cooperation will contribute to the revival of the field and its further development, "said Levan Ujmajuridze, director of Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the parties, which envisages strengthening the silk sector, conducting joint scientific research and sharing experiences.
