The process of certification of planting material is going without hindrance

The Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia carries out the process of certification of planting material throughout Georgia. In Adjara, the nursery of A (A) IP Agroservice Center received certification for 3 crops - apple, pear and tkemali. Giorgi Surmanidze, Minister of Agriculture of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, representatives of the Ministry and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) attended the certificate transfer event.

The USAID Agriculture Program helps to harmonize the state legislative framework and train specialists, as well as to increase the capacity of nurseries and to introduce a certification system. The program also includes financial support for farmers, which will help nurseries to move to the mandatory certification process by 2024. In conjunction with the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture, nursery work, planting material movement and phytosanitary journals will assist the seedling owners in the certification process.

The process of voluntary certification of planting material in Georgia has been going on since 2017. A well-organized system of certification of seed and planting material provides customers with quality material, which is an important basis for increasing productivity and export potential, increasing competitiveness and attracting investment. Within the framework of fulfillment of the obligations under the Association Agreement with Europe, seeds and planting material will be subject to mandatory certification in 2024.
