The project "Study and Protection of Wild Grapewine" has been completed

The 3-year project of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture "Study and Protection of Wild Grapevine in Georgia", which aimed to study the forms of wild vines, to determine and protect the modern geography of distribution, has been completed. Within the framework of the project, during the expeditions carried out on the territory of Georgia, 70 forms of wild vines were found and preserved on the perennial crops’ experimental-demonstration base of Jigaura. Genetic research of wild vines was carried out, its place in the field of world viticulture was determined, as well as the proximity to the cultivated varieties of vines was determined. In parallel, the scientist studied the eno-carpological data of wines made from wild vines.

Within the framework of the project, Georgian and English language articles and books were published, lectures and presentations were given to profiled higher education institutions and colleges, the Jigaura collection will be used for master's and doctoral theses.

It should be noted that wild vine is a typical plant of the flora of Georgia and in the past was widespread throughout the territory. In 1982, it was included in the Red Book of Georgia. The project "Study and Protection of Wild Grapevine in Georgia" was implemented in cooperation with the National Wine Agency within the framework of the fundamental research grant of the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia.
