The book "Wild Grapewine in Georgia" about the wild grapevine of Georgia was published

English-language books, which was published within the framework of the project "Study and Protection of wild grapevine of Georgia", it includes ampelographic descriptions of 41 forms of wild grapevines, eno-carpological data of wines made from wild vines, domestication, plant ecology, results of works carried out, many other important information and articles of various Georgian and foreign researchers.

The presentation of the book "Wild grapevine in Georgia" was held in the Vine and Wine Hall of the National Parliamentary Library of Georgia. It should be noted that this is the first edition of the Georgian wild grapevine since 1988.

"Genetic resources are the wealth of our country and we pay special attention to their protection. The most important place in the gene pool of plants is occupied by wheat and vines, which are, at the same time, crops bearing national values. Georgia has a great contribution to the formation and development of cultural viticulture and winemaking. The origin of cultivated vines was carried out in our territory through the domestication of wild grapevine forms, the result of which is 525 cultivated vines cultivated in the ethnographic corners of Georgia by popular selection,”- said Levan Ujmajuridze, Director of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture.

The goal of the 3-year project "Study and Protection of Wild Vine of Georgia" implemented by the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture within the framework of the grant of Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia was to study wild grapevine forms, establish and protect modern geography of distribution. Within the framework of the project, during the expeditions carried out on the territory of Georgia, 78 forms of wild vines were found and preserved on the experimental-demonstration base of Jighaura perennial crops.

"Georgian viticulture and winemaking, since 2017, has reached a different scale and awareness, so there is great interest in us. It became necessary to compile the materials, studies and articles on wild grapevines of Georgia into one book, which will be available to any interested person, "- said the project manager, Davit Maghradze.

Within the framework of the project, a genetic study of wild grapevines was carried out, its place in the field of world viticulture was determined, as well as the proximity to the cultivated vine varieties was determined; Georgian and English language articles and books were published.

It should be noted that wild vine is a typical plant of the flora of Georgia and in the past was widespread throughout the territory. In 1982, wild vines were included in ,,the Red Book of Georgia’’.
