Inspection of qualified nurseries is underway in Kakheti

In order to assess the phytosanitary status of qualified nurseries producing planting material, the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture, together with the National Food Agency, inspects nurseries in Kakheti region. The specialists introduced the seedling producers to the international requirements related to the production of healthy planting material and the stages to be passed in the certification process. During the field inspection, the representatives of the center are guided by the internationally recognized standard of the requirements for nurseries.

According to the decree of the Government of Georgia, the qualified nursery is obliged to ensure compliance with hygienic and transport requirements, traceability of the propagating material, both in the nursery and outside the nursery. The Scientific-Research center of Agriculture carries out inspections of qualified nurseries at least once a year. In case of detection of violations, if the nursery does not correct the defect within the period specified by the notification, the center will remove the farm from the register of qualified nurseries.

The ascertainment of nursery qualifications, which is a prerequisite for certification of planting material, has been ongoing since 2017. The certification system will provide the market with quality seeds and planting material, which will help replace imported material and promote local varieties, and protect consumers from unscrupulous producers.
