Levan Ujmajuridze attended the 9th session of the International Governing Body of Plant Genetic Resources
Levan Ujmajuridze, Director of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture, attended the 9th session of the Plant Genetic Resources’ Governing Body of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in New Delhi, Republic of India. Levan Ujmajuridze, since 2017, is the coordinator of genetic resources of Georgia in FAO.At the session, special attention was focused on the necessity of proper documentation, characterization, inventory and assessment for the development of sustainable and effective systems of "in situ" and "ex situ" conservation of plant genetic materials, promotion of creation, development and transfer of global information systems.
The main emphasis was placed on maximum diversification of agricultural crops, creation of national genetic banks, international involvement of resources, their availability, protection and strengthening of genetic resources using modern and traditional technologies.
In the working format, issues of collection, conservation, research, inventory and sustainable use of plant genetic resources, including wild forms, were talked over; Issues of cooperation with scientific and research institutions, creation of joint scientific programs, strengthening of education and research were also discussed.
At the session of the Governing Body, 2023 was declared as the year of millet culture. The next, 10th session of the Governing Body of the International Treaty will be held at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome in November 2023.
