In order to preserve the traditional varieties of cereal crops, the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture is launching an FAO grant project

In order to preserve the traditional varieties of wheat, corn and beans, the Scientific Research Center of Agriculture is launching a grant project of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The project "Strengthening linkages between in situ/on-farm and ex-situ conservation of local PGRFA from Georgia and use for adaptation to climate change’’ is 4 years long and will be implemented in 8 regions of Georgia.

The main goal of the project is to study the current state of collections of target crops in Georgia, to enrich the collection of the genetic bank of plants, to return the genetic resources of target crops taken out of Georgia at different times and placed in foreign Gene banks and to organize expeditions to collect genetic resources. The project also envisages the organization of field trials for wheat, corn and bean crops, the results of which will be uploaded to the local database of the Gene bank of plant genetic resources and to the European catalog (EURISCO).

Within the framework of the project, it is planned to organize workshops, field days, online webinars and exhibition-sales for farmers.
