Summary meetings of the technical cooperation project of the International Atomic Energy Agency are underway in Georgia

LEPL Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture is hosting the summary meeting of the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) technical cooperation project RER5024 "Enhancing the productivity and resilience to climate change of major food crops in Europe and Central Asia".

The representatives of 20 countries involved in the project summarized the results achieved within the framework of the three-year project and discussed future plans and implementation of potential projects in the direction of issues of crop improvement in Europe and Central Asia.

The meeting was opened by Iuri Nozadze, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Nodar Khatiashvili, Deputy Director of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture, and Fatma Sarsu, Project Coordinator of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

,,I am glad that Georgia and the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture are hosting the summary meeting of the technical cooperation project by the International Atomic Energy Agency and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. It is very important for us to represent the member country of the mentioned project, since the project helps to overcome the difficulties arising from climate change, as well as to strengthen the ties between the participating countries", said Iuri Nozadze.

The goal of the project was to obtain new breeding material of highly productive, drought-resistant annual local and introduced varieties using radiation mutagenesis and to enrich the genetic base of agro-diversity using selection methods (hybridization, mutagenesis, polyploidy, etc.).

In the international project, which included both scientific research and theoretical training courses, the representatives of the annual crops research division of the Scientific-Research Center were involved. Within the framework of the event, it is planned to visit the demonstration base in Tsilkani, where the delegation will get acquainted with the ongoing works at the base, conducted researches and results. The International Atomic Energy Agency technical cooperation project RER5024 " Enhancing the productivity and resilience to climate change of major food crops in Europe and Central Asia’’ has been ongoing since 2020, and the final meetings will be held in Georgia from November 20-24 with the support and organization of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia.
