In order to collect traditional varieties, an expedition was held in Shida Kartli municipalities

Within the scope of the international project of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the representatives of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture, together with the international expert of plant genetic resources, Petra Engel, conducted an expedition to the villages of Kaspi and Gori municipalities.

As part of the expedition, 36 samples of beans and corn were collected from the household plots of local residents, which will be dried in the laboratory of the Research Division of Standards and Certification of Seeds and Planting Material and will be prepared for storage.

The main goal of the FAO project ,,Strengthening linkages between in-situ/on farm and ex-situ conservation of local PGRFA from Georgia and use for adaptation to climate change’’ is to study the current state of collections of target crops in Georgia, to enrich the collection of the plant genetic bank, to return the genetic resources of target crops taken out of Georgia at different times and placed in foreign gene banks, and to organize expeditions to collect genetic resources. The project also envisages the organization of field trials for wheat, corn and bean crops, the results of which will be uploaded to the local database of the gene bank of plant genetic resources and to the European catalog (EURISCO).

Samples will be collected in 8 regions of Georgia within the framework of the ongoing project funded by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
