The representatives of the French National Forest Office (ONF) visited the Experimental-Demonstration Base of Perennial Crops of the LEPL Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture in Jighaura

The main objective of the visit was to better understand Georgian forests and biodiversity, forest adaptation in the context of climate change and issues related to genetic resources.

The guests examined the collection of grapevines, fruit trees and agroforestry crops at the base and got acquainted with the activities of the center. At the meeting held at the base, the main attention was paid to the projects implemented in the field of agroforestry in recent years and the species protected in the collection. It should be noted that the collection of forest crops of Jighaura has preserved 100 species, including unique and endangered species.

In 2015, the collection of forest crops of Jighaura was launched for the purpose of conservation and protection of forest crops. Most of the species are endemic. The collection consists of 4 sections, decorative, red list, wild ancestors of fruit trees and the main forest-forming species of Eastern Georgia. 20 species of the Red List are protected in the collection, including such unique species as Utkhovari, Saghsaghaji, Turanula etc.
