Farmers were trained on organic cultivation and management practices for local malting barley varieties

The goal of the training was to introduce the features of organic cultivation of local malting barley, popularize organic farming practices and present agrotechnical methods that contribute to the cultivation of barley varieties in an ecologically clean environment. Mzeinab Saralidze, a representative of the Organic Framing Division, provided the training participants with detailed information about the features of organic barley production, the importance of restoring and preserving local varieties, which is a necessary condition for both preserving agrobiodiversity and promoting the production of quality Georgian beer. The practical training was conducted on the barley trial plot of local farmer Mariam Tsiklauri. Gocha Tsereteli, Head of the Organic Farming Division, spoke about the results of the research conducted at the Center on the barley variety selected for bioproduction – “Zes 5”. According to him, out of the 12 biopreparations used, the best effect was shown by the liquid of Ltd ,,Bioagro’’ - Biohumus, Geohumate and Biosuper, which was reflected in the increase in grain yield. The yield in the test plots was 0.06-1.15 tons higher than the control variant.
The training discussed the establishment of demonstration plots of local barley varieties, which will help in the future to assess their practical potential and interest beer producers.
LEPL Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture continues to search for Georgian local barley varieties both nationwide and from foreign gene banks. The center actively works to raise awareness among farmers, holds meetings and trainings in the regions, which will continue in the future with the aim of promoting organic production and protecting agrobiodiversity.
