International Day of Biodiversity was celebrated in Tsilkani

The International Day of Biodiversity is celebrated on the 22nd of May under the auspices of the United Nations, aiming to raise awareness of biodiversity and increase consciousness.

Georgia traditionally joined this day by holding the seminar on bio-plant growing and bio-animal breeding for local farmers on the basis of the research-demonstrative base of the Scientific-Research center of Agriculture in Tsilkani. The seminar was conducted by the specialists of the division of organic farming.

Within the framework of the meeting, participants viewed the planted bio-plots on the base of Tsilkani and got acquainted with the work of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture.

The seminar was attended by the Deputy Minister of Agriculture Iuri Nozadze, by the Director of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture – Levan Ujmajuridze and the representatives of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Georgia. They discussed the development of organic farming in Georgia, involvement of state and international organizations, their role and planned projects.

,,Georgia is a country with a variety of the soil and climatic conditions that contributes to biodiversity. Almost all agricultural products are produced in Georgia, like cereals, legumes, horticultural or fruit cultures. The Scientific-Research center of Agriculture works in all directions to restore Georgian endemic varieties’’ – said Iuri Nozadze.

It should be noted that Biodiversity Day is celebrated all over the world since 1993. 2017 is declared as a year of biodiversity and sustainable tourism by the United Nations.
