NEW SPECIES HAVE BEEN ADDED TO THE JIGHAURA FOREST CROP COLLECTION

The new species have been added to the collection of forest crops at the Jighaura demonstrative plot of perennial crops of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture. At present, the collection of forest crops preserves 88 species, including unique and endangered species.

Jighaura Forest Crop Collection was established in 2015 for the purpose of forest conservation and protection. Most of the species are endemic. The collection consists of 4 sections, the main species are ornamental and are in red list, with fruit-bearing wild ancestors. These species are the forest-makers of Eastern Georgia. The collection contains 20 species of the Red List, including such unique species as Utkhovari, Saghsaghaji, Khemartskva, Turanula and others.

The collection plays an important role in the process of training young staff - students from different institutions regularly undergo practical training.

Today the largest place in the world is occupied by the reproduction of fast-growing wood species and the development of plantation farms. Jighaura is actively working in this direction as well. 25 fast-growing poplar forms have been imported to the base from abroad and studies are underway to select the best forms adapted to the soil-climatic conditions of Georgia.
