IN ORDER TO PROTECT THE WILD VINE OF GEORGIA, 70 FORMS HAVE ALREADY BEEN FOUND

The Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture, in cooperation with the National Wine Agency, continues the project "Study and Protection of Wild Vine in Georgia". The aim of the three-year project is to study wild vine forms, establish and preserve modern geography of distribution.

The head of the project, Davit Maghradze, presented the results of his two-year work to the staff of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture, to the students of the Faculty of Viticulture and Enology of the Caucasus and Georgian Technical Universities and to the specialists in the field at an online meeting. As the head of the project noted, 70 forms of wild vines have already been found. Genetic research of wild vines is being carried out, its place in the field of world viticulture is being determined, as well as the proximity to the cultivated varieties of vines is being determined. At the same time, scientists are studying the eno-carpological data of wines made from wild vines and Saperavi and Cabernet Sauvignon have been taken under control.

It should be noted that wild vine is a typical plant of the flora of Georgia and in the past was widespread throughout the territory. In 1982, it was included in the Red Book of Georgia. The Law of Georgia on Vine and Wine emphasizes the importance of Georgian wild vines and considers it, along with Georgian vine varieties, a "national treasure".

The project "Study and Protection of Wild Vine of Georgia" is implemented within the framework of the grant of fundamental research of Shota Rustaveli Georgian National Science Foundation.
