The Government of Georgia has adopted a resolution on the approval of the technical regulation "Rule for determining the minimum conditions for checking the varietal characteristics of grapevines"

The purpose of the technical regulation is to establish the conditions for checking the morphological and physiological characteristics of the variety, stability and uniformity of the grapevine variety. According to the technical regulation, it becomes mandatory to create a catalog of grapevine varieties that are recognized for certification and inspection of standard propagating material in the country. Variety testing will be carried out by means of a crop inspection, which should include a sufficient number of characteristics that make it possible to describe the varieties. The minimum conditions for carrying out the inspection should also be defined, which must be based on the existing scientific and technical knowledge.

The body conducting the inspection of vine varietal characteristics will be the LEPL Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia. The resolution will come into force on March 1, 2023. These technical regulations have been prepared to ensure the effective implementation of the obligations under the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA).
