"Field Day 2022" was held in Kakheti

"Field Day 2022" was held at the Dedoplistskaro, Telavi and Akhmeta experimental-demonstration bases of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture in order to familiarize farmers and field specialists with new and promising varieties of wheat, triticale, barley and rye. Farmers, along with the traditional varieties of cereal crops, have been introduced to new hybrids, which are being tested by the Cereal Crops’ Research Division of the Scientific-Research Center.

"Field Day 2022" was attended by Iuri Nozadze, the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Levan Ujmajuridze, Director of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture, representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, regional information-consulting service and farmers.

"Increasing the varietal diversity of Georgian cereals is important for the country's food security, while restoring and spreading folk varieties responds to the challenges of climate change. Registration of new industrial varieties and allowing them to be distributed is a good way for farmers to have access to cheap and high-quality seed material," - mentioned Iuri Nozadze.

Specialists select new forms for agro-technical traits, stability, yield and disease resistance, which are tested in different regions, in different climatic conditions and zones from the received forms of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center. At the next stage, the best form for a particular region will be selected and registered. The selected form undergoes variety testing and is distributed in farms.
