Levan Ujmajuridze, Director of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture, participated in the meeting of the European Plant Genetic Resources Steering Committee

The 17th meeting of the European Cooperative Programme for Plant Genetic Resources (ECPGR) Steering Committee was held in Lisbon, Portugal.

National coordinators of plant genetic resources of 31 European countries and representatives of various international organizations attended the meeting.

Georgia has been a member of the European Cooperative Program for Plant Genetic Resources (ECPGR) since 2019 and in the current year it also became a member of the European Plant Cryopreservation Group.

In parallel with the last X phase report, the Executive Committee presented the strategy and perspective directions of the new Phase XI (2024-2028) of the Cooperative Programme for Plant Genetic Resources (ECPGR), such as: A European Genebank Integrated System (AEGIS), creation of the European Evaluation Network (EVA), establishment of the European Center for Information and Coordination of Genetic Resources (ECIC/GR) and others.

The Laboratory of Seed Quality of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture has obtained the accreditation of compliance with ISO/IEK 17025 standards since 2020.

According to the priority plan of the new phase XI of the European Cooperative Programme for Plant Genetic Resources (ECPGR), in order to manage the collections sustainably, the plant genebank collections in Georgia, it is planned to develop and implement an ISO 9001 quality certification management system - quality infrastructure in the same genebank.

Within the framework of the visit, Levan Ujmajuridze, Director of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture, held a meeting with the management of the National Agricultural and Veterinary Scientific Institute of Lisbon, he visited the national collection of vines of the experimental station of viticulture and winemaking and got acquainted with the current research activities in the direction of vine selection at the institute.

At the held meetings, issues of future scientific cooperation between Georgia and Portugal were planned.
