Levan Ujmajuridze, Director of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture, took part in the regular session of the Genetic Resources Commission in Rome

The 19th regular session was held in Rome, the capital of Italy, as part of the 40th anniversary celebrations of the Commission on Genetic Resources of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Levan Ujmajuridze, Director of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture, took part in the session.

It should be noted that since 2017, Levan Ujmajuridze has been the coordinator of genetic resources of Georgia at FAO.

At the session, special attention was paid to the activities carried out by the countries of the world in terms of biodiversity preservation in such important areas as conservation-preservation-adaptation, sustainable use of genetic resources of plants, animals, birds, water species, microorganisms and invertebrates, and the importance of their role in climate change mitigation. The importance of strengthening the legislative base, especially the preservation of ancient, national, local varieties, development of special conditions for registration and breeding was emphasized.

The Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Qu Dongyu, in his concluding speech, noted that governments should support the strengthening of selection and breeding activities in countries, the production of seed and planting materials, the introduction and expansion of seeding systems, the use of bio-stimulants and the propagation of plant biological agents. Wide cultivation of such species and varieties of plants, which ensure the maximum assimilation of carbon dioxide and accumulation in the form of organic carbon in biomass and soil.

Levan Ujmajuridze participated in the discussion of management issues of genetic resources banks. The main topics discussed were conservation principles, protection of genetic diversity and access to information.
