In 2023, the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture certified more than 36,000 seedlings and more than 700 tons of seed material

Within the framework of fulfilling the obligations assumed by the Association Agreement of Georgia with the European Union, the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture, since 2015, carries out the process of voluntary certification of seeds since 2015, of planting material since 2017. In 2023, the Division of Standards, Certification, Planning and Economic Analysis, based on the application, inspected 27 seed and planting material production companies, from which 8 were involved in the certification process.

It should be noted that according to the resolution of the Government of Georgia, only nurseries registered in the register of qualified nurseries are authorized to place products corresponding to their standard category of seedlings (CAC standard) on the market. According to the law, the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture conducts inspections of qualified nurseries at least once a year. In 2023, together with the National Food Agency, the documentary and phytosanitary status of 49 nurseries was checked. Analytical samples of seed material were taken in warehouses of 6 producers of seed material; 46 samples taken from commercial seed material were subjected to laboratory analysis.

The purpose of introducing a quality control system for seed and planting material is to maintain varietal and genetic purity, to provide the farmer with genetically pure seed and planting material, and to guarantee a high-quality harvest. At the same time, the introduction of the certified system will protect the market from falsified products.
