Meeting was held with local winegrowers in Guria Region

Levan Ujmajuridze, the director of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture, together with Giorgi Urushadze, the State Trustee in the Guria region, and Zurab Vacharadze, the Deputy Chairman of the National Wine Agency, held a meeting with the winegrowers and wine producers of Ozurgeti, Chokhatauri, and Lanchkhuti Municipalities. The participants of the meeting discussed the issues related to the appropriateness of the status of the wine of the designation of origin "Chkhaveri of Guria".

"Today, great attention is paid to the restoration and cultivation of local grape varieties in Guria. Chkhaveri is one of the outstanding, ancient grape varieties, the areas of which are growing significantly in the Guria Region. The meeting held in the region, together with the main topics, was devoted to the discussion of the problems in the field. First of all, the issue of creating a qualified grapevine nursery in the Guria Region, which will guarantee access to quality planting material of various varieties of vines for those who want to plant new vineyards," noticed Levan Ujmajuridze, Director of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture.

The participants of the meeting focused on the challenges in the field of viticulture and winemaking in the region, the importance of conducting theoretical and practical trainings in order to raise the knowledge of farmers, and the state programs supporting winegrowers.

"The meeting held in the region is a continuation of the great work that is connected with the revival of the grape variety Chkhaveri, unique for Gurulebi, and the granting of the status of local origin to the wine produced from it. Along with the discussion of these and other issues, the discussion at the meeting touched on increasing the availability of laboratory facilities for the wine producers of the Guria Region, arranging free training courses on viticulture and winemaking for farmers and interested persons, which is important for increasing awareness", said Giorgi Urushadze, the State Trustee in the Guria Region.

The meeting, which was held at the "Anaseuli" Center for Integrated Protection of Soil, Food and Plants named after Adam Beridze, was attended by the mayors of Ozurgeti, Chokhatauri, Lanchkhuti and the chairmen of the Municipal Assembly, Metropolitan Archbishop Ioseb of Shemokmedi and other persons who got acquainted with the working processes and scientific projects in the laboratories of the Anaseuli Base. At the end of the meeting, a tasting of wines made from the grape variety "Chkhaveri" grown in the villages of the municipalities of the Guria Region was held.
