The tasting commission evaluated the wines produced from rare grape varieties of the Jighaura vineyard collection
A tasting of varietal wines was
held at the LEPL Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture. The purpose of the
tasting was to evaluate the oenological potential of rare Georgian grape
varieties.The tasting was led by David
Chichua, Head of the Center's Viticulture and Wine-making Research Division.
The tasting commission consisted of the Director of the LEPL Scientific-Research
Center of Agriculture Levan Ujmajuridze, the center's winegrowers, students and
invited winemaking experts. About 70 samples of white and red wines produced on
the same microvinification basis from rare grape varieties of Kartli, Kakheti
and Imereti regions preserved in the Jighaura vineyard collection were
presented at the tasting.The following varieties received
special approval and high evaluation of the commission: Safena, Ingilouri,
Mtsvane Kakhuri, Vazisubani Black, Simonaseuli (Kakheti); Chitiskvertskha,
Jvari, Kishuri, Atenis Safere, Buza (Kartli); Krakhuna, Kapistoni, Kundza,
Adanasuri, Gabekhauri, Argvetuli Safere (Imereti). "LEPL
Scientific-research Center of Agriculture works on the issues of finding and
restoring Georgian endemic grape varieties, studying their ampelographic and
oenological indicators. It is very important to organize such work tastings. It
will promote not only the promotion of rare Georgian grape varieties, but also
their return to production by assessing their oenological potential," said
the expert, oenologist Zurab Sturua.
