Theoretical-practical training was held on local barley varieties in Alvani

In the village of Alvani, Akhmeta municipality, a theoretical and practical lesson was held, organized by the Organic Farming Division of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture, on the topic: "Study and evaluation of local, health-promoting  barley varieties."The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of researching the local barley gene pool and identifying health-promoting properties of barley.
The training was held in two parts. In the theoretical part, farmers were introduced to the historical significance of barley culture, the directions of its use, and the ongoing research activities of the Organic Farming Division.
The practical part was held at the trial plot of local farmer Fridon Shvelashvili (Ltd Tusheti 2024), where participants observed local barley varieties in field conditions and underwent practical training.
The event was hosted by Mzeinab Saralidze, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences and Senior Specialist of the Organic Farming Division.
The training focused on the role of barley as a historically important crop in the mountainous regions of Georgia, including in the tradition of beer production. It was noted that the Center is actively working on the search and propagation of local varieties, which is necessary for their preservation and use for both food and technological purposes. Local farmers and representatives of the agricultural sector participated in the event.
Such trainings not only contribute to the protection of biodiversity, but also create the basis for the development of small entrepreneurship and traditional Georgian beer production.
